'AIRWOLF II' MP3 Airwolf teaser Blog

(12 November 2012)

Udi Harpaz fantastic episodic score from the 'AIRWOLF II' episode in Airwolf's early 3rd Season
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Teaser MP3 file:
Airwolf 3rd Season episode 'AIRWOLF II' with Jan-Michael Vincent and Wings Hauser
3rd season Airwolf episode and fan-favourite, 'AIRWOLF' II' provides a big orchestral-heavy score in four parts, perfectly illustrating Harlan Jenkins (played to egotistical perfection by WINGS HAUSER) single-minded theft and subsequent battle with Hawke, pitting the two Airwolf choppers and two Airwolf test pilots against one another.
Airwolf 3rd Season episode 'AIRWOLF II' with the Zeus' demo of Redwolf to Secretary Dunlap
The Zeus demo sequence provides the third part of the score with fast, aggressive strings with synth overlay as a back-drop to all the best Redwolf action. Great shot of Archangel after Zeus reveals Redwolf's existence for the first time.

Big synth and heavy orchestral score for Airwolf's early 3rd Season music score for 'AIRWOLF II' and probably one of Udi Harpaz' best-loved of his episodic theme music from his stint on the show.

This 8-minute epic for the fan-favourite episode is made from a medley made up of four parts:

The first part is the Opening sequence (with the guest star credits etc.) were Archangel and his "Archangela white lady" pilot, Amanda lands at the Chamber of Commerce' black tie dinner to chew out Hawke in his visceral and mental war of thinking that Hawke was part of a USAF military train hijacking to secure Airwolf weaponry.

The second part of the theme is from Harlan taking the camo net off Redwolf for his duel with Hawke and the sequence with Harlan flying around Hawke, Dom & Archangel in their JetRanger after initially stealing Redwolf. Big, BIG, aggressive cello and contrabass action here.

The third part is from the Zeus demo sequence of Airwolf II's upgraded capabilities over the original Lady, with the fourth part being the fight sequence between Hawke, Archangel and Alonzo Del Olmo's goons at his Derado Canyon ranch.

WHAT I THOUGHT OF IT
'AIRWOLF II'  was an interesting and different start to the series as Udi brought in a different composing style for the season ("THE HORN OF PLENTY" season premiere the week before started it) for Exec Producer, Bernie Kowalski, which he took right through to 'FORTUNE TELLER' really, with much more emphasis on orchestral over synth, but still combining the two.

The strings in 'AIRWOLF II' are just so intense, fast and were just plain crazy and time-consuming to mix (that's the Mk6 draft mix version you're listening to above as it went through plenty of iterations), as it was a trade-off in converting the original Mono off-air version which is very flat and mid-range for mid-80s TV speakers as well as under all those Redwolf foley FX and actors' dialogue, to having the full dynamics of the orchestra.

I didn't want it to become too "muddy" at the bottom end either as I feel you should always be able to hear all the instruments with high-end audio gear, which you can.

It's the guys with the bottom end gear (like the tiny, free speakers you get with a Dell PC) I fear for though as I'm pretty sure it'll push their systems to breaking point - nothing I can do about that though - and will sound crap on there anyway - this one was for the good gear to play with. I've tested it on everything from an iPod/iPhone to audiophile' system and it blew the ears & doors off.

WHAT'S COMING NEXT?
As I said in yesterday's "FAMILY THEME" Blog, I've nearly finished mixing the "EAGLE'S THEME" (both real cello solo, orchestral and synth version) with some final tweaks and changes still to do; so after that, all that's left is 'PROOF THROUGH THE NIGHT' and 'THE HORN OF PLENTY' mixes to finish my CD2 of Airwolf Extended Themes 2CD Soundtrack. So, it'll defo not be out this side of Christmas, before you ask again.

DID I HEAR TALK OF COSTS OVER ON THE 'AIRWOLF THEMES' CHAT FORUM?
Yes, the 2CD will **probably** be in and around GBP £30-ish per set (or that's what I'm aiming to keep it around) but final licensing costs from Universal (we've increased to 40+ tracks - YEAH, we've added more to Jan's CD1 so details on that upgrade soon - now up from 35+ which is horrendously high in music terms) and production costs will dictate the final figure. Quite a few folks have asked how much they should squirrel away from their Christmas budget. Well, that's my best estimate so far.

'FAMILY THEME' MP3 "Airwolf" Teaser

(10 December 2012)

The "FAMILY THEME" from Airwolf's 1st & 2nd Seasons from the Airwolf Extended Themes soundtrack 2CD
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The MP3 Teaser:

Airwolf 'BITE OF THE JACKAL' 1st Season Airwolf episode Familiy Theme Image
1st Season episode 'BITE OF THE JACKAL' is where Sylvester Levay first composed this theme and was primarily for the epilogue scene with Phoebe Danner (played by a young SHANNEN DOHERTY) finally reuniting with her dad outside Hawke's cabin
Airwolf 'SINS OF THE PAST' 2nd Season Airwolf episode Familiy Theme Image
2nd Season episode 'SINS OF THE PAST' provides the first two-thirds of this "Family Theme" medley with Dom in jail for the suspected murder of his ex-wife, Lylah and then reminiscing about his late daughter, Sally Ann's locket.

One of the more emotive themes from both the Airwolf 1st Season episode "BITE OF THE JACKAL"  and 2nd Season episode "SINS OF THE PAST" was one of Sylvester Levay's wonderful handful of 'character' themes from the Airwolf TV series.

The three-part medley starts with Caitlin visiting Dom in jail as he's being held on suspicion of murdering his ex-wife, Lylah. In an emotional scene with Dom's utter frustration and lament at being kept "in a cage" whilst totally innocent, is the soft Oboe-led theme underscoring the raw emotion of both people. Both Jeannie-Bruce and Ernie were crying their eyes out in this scene.

The second part is of Hawke & Dom's initial trip to San Remo island for Sally Ann's funeral, with Dom mourning both his daughter and a failure in his past whilst being fully aware they've still a mission to do for the Firm first and foremost after this bit of business on the side.

The third and final part is from the final epilogue scene in 'BITE OF THE JACKAL' with a full orchestra playing the 'Family Theme' as Phoebe reunites with her father after the Firm found him as a favour to Dom.

WHAT'S COMING NEXT?
The next blog will be a full one for 'AIRWOLF II' (sorry, I've only got the link up on Facebook so far rather than doing a full blog for it).

'CROSSOVER' Theme MP3 "Airwolf" Teaser

(2 November 2012)

The 'CROSSOVER' episodic score by Mark J.Cairns for the Airwolf Extended Themes soundtrack 2CD
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After a long delay on my Blogger updates (I put some teasers directly up onto Facebook in the interim though) on my part due to lots happening this Summer (see below), here's one of Udi Harpaz' themes from Airwolf with a little more orchestra mixed in now too.

Airwolf 3rd Season Theme - 'CROSSOVER' music
The late JOHN VAN DREELEN (Left) as 'Victor Janek'  and ISA ANDERSEN (aka ISA JANK in her native Germany) as 'Inge Janek' provide the focus for this Airwolf episode, with a poignant love theme in the middle of the track as laser weapons expert Inge decides whether to defect and seek asylum on US soil from the old Czechoslovakia under immense pressure from Archangel and another government agency. Victor is killed during the defection.

Airwolf 3rd Season Theme - 'CROSSOVER' music including this piece from Baja.
Baja, Mexico - with Hawke helping the Janeks defect
An interesting soundscape and mix of themes in this South American-sounding medley from "CROSSOVER"  and was the last episode composed by Udi Harpaz before Sylvester Levay came back again from the next episode.

The four-part medley starts with the atmospheric use of acoustic guitar, woodblock, cabasa and trumpets to set the "Mexican" feel to the episode as Hawke waits in his jeep at dawn for the Janeks to arrive by speedboat.

The middle two parts are from Inge's memories and grief for her dad as they're hiding in the mine entrance, with a poignant piano piece and then into full orchestra, which is then used as a love theme for the final epilogue scene at Santini Air (spot the HX1 helicopter in the background of this scene! In reality, Jetcopter's owner Peter McKernan, Snr's own personal ship). The final part is an extended melodic synth piece based on when Hawke tries to steal a truck to get Inge and himself over the border but is thwarted by two of Shrankov's goons in a jeep.

SO WHY THE LONG BREAK IN THE BLOG AND WHY'S IT ALL TAKING SO LONG? WE WANT IT NOW!!
Okay, lots happened over the Summer 2012 but the bottom line is it was decided between Frankie [at Einstein] and myself that I'd finish the final 6 mixes ('AIRWOLF II', 'CROSSOVER, 'Family Theme', 'THE HORN OF PLENTY, 'Eagle's Theme' and 'PROOF THOUGH THE NIGHT') myself due to their complexity with their orchestral instruments and the amount of studio time they'd take to complete to the standard of the other 14 synth-based tracks.

So I upgraded my own kit and bought Pro Tools 10 and everything else that was required and sat and learned it all myself from scratch after everything Frankie taught me at Einstein for the past year. Talk about being thrown in at the deep end, and I completed the hardest one first - 'AIRWOLF II' (will be up on a separate blog within the week). It just allows me ultimate control and I'm not under pressure with the studio clock ticking, so I can put in the late hours any night of the week (and without waiting for spare studio time at Einstein).

WHEN WILL THE ALBUM BE OUT NOW?
I've three more to Mix at this point - HORN, Eagles and PROOF. So, it'll not be this side of Christmas, before you ask. Yeah, I'm behind on my estimate because of all this now. But I want it to be right.
